Is Your Car a Classic or Historic?

What kind of car do you have – “historic” or “classic”?

You’ve owned it forever or you’re eyeing it online or at a car show — one of the great muscle cars of the 60s and 70s or a real vintage beauty from the 40s.The State of Arizona MVD has 3 classic and historic specialty license plates, each for a different type of vehicle.

To qualify as a “Classic Car,” it must be on the “Approved Classics” list of The Classic Car Club of America. The club defines a car a classic as a “‘Fine’ or ‘Distinctive’ automobile, American or foreign built, produced between 1925 and 1948.” The 1940s Wolseley pictured above is a great example.

A “Historic Vehicle” is at least 25 years old. The classic 1960 Chevy El Camino shown above is a perfect example. Though it may be called a “classic,” as many muscle cars are, in AZ, it’s considered a “Historic Vehicle.” Note: the 25 year or older rule may not apply to your vehicle.*

1915 Ford Model “T”

Now, a “Horseless Carriage” is a vehicle that was made in 1915 or older like the 1915 Ford Model “T” on the right.

Another thing you need to know before applying for one of the classic or historic tags, is that your insurance company MUST insure it properly as a classic vehicle to be exempt from an emissions test and must have a letter from the Insurance company saying they meet AZ requirements for collectible insurance.

Classic cars are not meant to be driven on the street regularly except to go to a car show. *If your car is around the 25 year old mark, you need to contact your insurance company to make sure it qualifies as a historic vehicle.

Please give us a call and we can help you with any questions about collectible vehicles and their proper registration.

AZ Plate Helps Homeless Women Vets

You wouldn’t think it, but the statistics are staggering.

Women veterans are 4 times more likely to become homeless than their male veteran counterparts and non-veteran women. ~American Journal of Public Health

They’re not your typical homeless person. Their needs are different. Besides PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), most also suffered sexual harassment, if not abuse and many of them are moms, some single parents. The VA has had to make major adjustments to help these women.

Your family wants the person back that they sent off to war. They’ll never get that person back.

In this other video from the Military News Channel, shows what women vets returning from service abroad are going through in trying to get back into civilian life.

You can help female Veterans of Arizona by purchasing the new Women Veterans license plate. It’s available to anyone and can be personalized (maximum of 6 characters).

$25 initial application fee/ $25 annual renewal. $17 goes to a special account in the Arizona Veterans’ Donation Fund to assist homeless women veterans. Please call us at Prompt Titles & Registrations so we can order your plate. 602-957-0450. ($5 convenience fee applies – void with a Military ID.)

Also available with a disability symbol,  ask about it when you call.

What to do with the car you inherited

It’s what you’ve always wanted! An eccentric uncle leaves you his property in his will. Wow! You get excited, but then you wonder, “What did I get?” That happened recently to Gary, a young central Phoenix entrepreneur.

He drives up to the address given to him by the lawyer and finds a not-too-shabby mobile home. As he puts the key in the door, he dreads what’s inside. “Was he a hoarder?”

Amazingly enough, eccentric Uncle Jack wasn’t. He kept a rather clean home full of WWII memorabilia. As Gary walks around, he sees pictures of Uncle Jack in front of a B52 bomber and his war buddies. “Gee, I should have gotten to know him better. I bet he had some great war stories!” He then sees a picture of him in front of a 1954 Chevy. “Cool car.”

After he walks around the house he goes out to the back yard where there’s a detached garage. He unlocks the padlock and as the sunlight illuminates the contents, Gary is pleasantly surprised. There sits the 1954 Chevy! It hasn’t been driven in years, but Gary sees it as a restoration project. “How did Uncle Jack know that I’ve always wanted to restore an old car?!”

Well, before Gary gets the Chevy street-ready, he has to deal with the title transfer for not just the car, but also the mobile home. The land the home sits on is real estate, but the mobile home is a vehicle. After going through all of his uncle’s papers, he couldn’t find the titles of the home or the car.

Luckily, Gary heard about Prompt Titles and Registrations on Thomas Rd & 30th Street in Phoenix. He called them and they came to the house to do a Level 1 inspection on the home and the car. As Authorized MVD Third Party Vehicle Inspectors, they provided a “Bonded Title” for both showing clarification of vehicle title ownership.

This process can be used when someone doesn’t have a properly endorsed title or proper supporting documentation.

Now, Uncle Jack could have saved Gary all the trouble by filling out a “Beneficiary Designation” form for “Vehicle Title Transfer Upon Death” when he wrote his will. They still would have had to do a Level 1 inspection because of the missing titles, but ownership would have transferred smoothly when Uncle Jack passed away.

This is a hypothetical story, but if you find yourself in a similar situation or want to designate a beneficiary for your motor home, car or truck, call the friendly folks at Prompt Titles and Registrations for help at 602-957-0450. They also offer auto insurance. It’s your one-stop place to get your vehicle ready for the road. (Vehicles 1966 and older do not require emissions tests.)

3 Things you need to know when selling a car in AZ

For Sale signIf you’re selling, have sold or plan to sell a vehicle or transfer ownership somehow in Arizona, here are a few things you need to know:

  1. You must complete a “Sold Notice” – this protects you from any liability for accidents, tickets, etc. that may occur after the sale.
  2. You must also complete the transfer information on the back of the Certificate of Title and give it to the new owner.
  • Make sure it’s a “clean” title and there aren’t any liens on it.
  • If the title is missing or lost, you can bring it to any of our offices and we’ll do a title inspection.
  • Remove the license plate from the vehicle and keep it. You are responsible for that plate. If something happens to the vehicle after the sale like being involved in a crime or left abandoned, you’ll be responsible. Depending on when you registered the vehicle, you may qualify for a credit or refund. Visit one of our offices.
